Climax
Pursuant to the request you made of the Climax Molybdenum Company during your September
29, 2004 inspection of the Climax Mine, this letter provides a plan for monftoring wildlife use of
surface water impoundments on the affected land area of the above referenced permit. This plan
presents an approach that will be initiated within the next month. Please provide comment on this
proposal as soon as possible.
The greater than 14,000 acre property position of Climax is unique in many respects. Straddling
the Continental Divide, it forms the headwaters of three major drainages -Arkansas River, Eagle
River, and Tenmile Creek. Elevations cover approximately 3300 vertical feet and range from
10,260'msl at the property boundary on Tenmile Creek to over 13,550'msl atop Bartlett Mountain.
The elevation extremes coupled with historic and present land use on the properly have created a
wide mosaic of somewhat fragmented habitats that makes the property unique. The site is not
situated on a primary migratory flyway for waterfowl, however there is an abundance of diverse
fauna that occupy the land on which the Climax Mine resides. Wildlife are not confined to the use
of specific water pools based on an abundance of water at the site.
There are ten (10) open water bodies on the Climax property. These bodies include seven (7)
process or contact water uriits- TtSe water bodies include:
• Arkansas Gravel Pond
• Chalk Mountain Reservoir
• Buffhers Lake
Process/Contact Water.
• Robinson Reservoir
• Warren's Pumpstation
• Tim's Pond
• Robinson Tailing Impoundment
• Tenmile Tailing Impoundment
• Mayflower Tailing Impoundment
• Concrete Ponds Below 5-dam (a.k.a. Mayflower Clear Pond)
