drive. A level 1 license has no restriction. Those issued a level 2 license are limited to driving only in the
shop and plant areas, and MAY NOT drive in the pit(s). The level 2 restriction begins at the intersection
east of the small vehicle fueling island, on the main haul road, after the cross-over to left hand traffic.
Speed limits and traffic rules are reviewed regularly and rigorously enforced.
The following 11 topics are considered the golden rules for mine traffic safety at Colowyo Mine.
• Speed limits; know and understand them. They are 45 mph on paved haul roads, 35 mph in pit
areas, 10 mph in the shop and in the plant area. However, poor road or weather conditions may
dictate slower speeds.
• Traffic Patterns
1. Right-hand traffic is mandatory in all areas except in the Pit. The crossover point from
right to left traffic is well marked and has been placed on the main haul road near the
Upper Shop.
2. Yielding
• Observe and obey traffic control signs designating "YIELD" requirements. When
you encounter a "YIELD" sign, slow down, stop if necessary, and proceed with
caution.
• Drive defensively
• Passing Vehicles
1. Positive contact must be made before passing another vehicle. Do not attempt to pass
unless verbal permission by radio transmission has been received.
• No passing at or near intersections or where visibility is limited
• Following Distances
1. A minimum of 150 feet between vehicles must be maintained with the distance increasing
according to conditions or speed.
• Mayday procetlu~e ~- '~~- -~~
1. All vehicle traffic must pull to the side of the road, stop and remain stopped during a
declared emergency; called a "Mayday"
• Restricted Areas
1. Do not enter restricted areas, such as those marked with signs, cones, berms or ditches,
without proper authorization
• Seat Belts
1. Must be worn by all occupants riding in all vehicles on the mine site
2. Must be worn in all occupants riding in company vehicles that leave mine site
• Approaching Equipment
1. No vehicle may approach within 150 feet of a shovel, dozer or other piece of operating
support equipment without first making positive, verbal contact with the operator of that
equipment. Additionally, vehicles may not be driven into the swing radius of an operating
dragline without positive contact and permission to enter.
• Towing other vehicles
1. No vehicle is allowed to tow another vehicles unless such equipment is designed to do so.
• Pre-Operationallnspection
1. All equipment must undergo a documented pre-operational inspection before operating.
Light vehicles shall also be inspected with a discrepancy report filed for abnormal items.
In all cases, safety issues will be corrected prior to equipment being used.
• Parking
1. Do not approach or park on the blind side of equipment
2. Park ONLY in designated areas
3. Use wheel chocks or turn wheels into a berm if parked on uneven terrain.
