Box 1670
Granby, CO 80046
Dear Mr. I{atteaberg;
LO~~O
~~~~
O't' OF `~
Far [lrldlije- .
ForPenp/<
We have reviewed your appticadon for a Special Use Permit for a sand and aggregate pit east of Granby,
Colorado and have the following cotnmetrfs. .
The Colorado Division of Wildlife does own the property to the southeast of the proposed pit. This
property was acquired is 1999 for the preservation of wtldfifa habitat The primary use by wildlife is
wintering elk and deer as well as summer habitat for a variety of species. Winter habitat in Grand County
is limited, especially in light ofthe rapid development ofadjacent lands. The CDOW acquired this
property to provide big game winter range, aIIeviate game damage and financial impacfs on adjacent
agricultural producers.
With that in romd we are concerned with several items as it relates to the proposed activity at the pit.
1. ,Operating season- h is very important to avoid disturbance to the wintering area from mid November
then Apn7 each year. Wii1 the pit be closed in the wiener?
2. Noise and dust abatement affecting those species which use the area m the summer for fawning and
summer habitat.
3. Trespass on CDOW lands. This parcel is elosed to human activity from November 15 thru April I S .
each year. A project has been requested to fence the parcel, but it Las not been done to date.
There is also more use by wr7dLfe of the projected pit than identified in yow proposal ~ Wht7e $ is correct
that h'vds, including raptors, and rodents nsa the property. Large ungulates, especially deer and elk (up
to 100f), Lave been seen foraging and moving through the property to the hay meadow to the west.
We note that you have a noxious weed plan and would encourage use ofnatiye grasses, forties and
shruba The straw sediment Shers should be certified weed free. Fatly detection and treatment is essartial
for both your property and the State of Colorado's.
DEPARTMENT OF WITURAL RESOURCES, Gres E Waldtar, Ex LAredw
V4t.lAJFE COAAu4SSI0N, Bernard L t?fxk Jr., Chatmrn ~ Rkk Ena~om.
