Shirley Lindsay, Office of Surface Hining, Reclamation
and Enforcement, Denver, Colorado
From: Energy Project Leader, USF~lS, Colorado Field Office, Lakewood, Colorado
Subject: Review of Bear Coal Company Mine Plan
We have reviewed the Bear Coal Company Mine Plan and believe that since the
mine has been in operation for 48 years, most of the adverse impacts to
wildlife have already occurred. Due to the location of the mine, in relation
[o the North Fork Gunnison River, we believe it is very important that all coal
slag, petroleum products, and other toxic materials be very carefully controlled
so they are not allowed to enter the river. To accomplish this, it is very
important Bear Coal install and maintain retention dikes and ponds and dispose
of all slag in areas away from the river and keep a healthy, vegetative buffer
~,~ zone between the river and working areas.
The bald eagle is commonly found wintering along the North Fork and, therefore,
is probably found in and around the mine site. However, the mine should not
have any effect on their continued use. We are presently not aware of any other
federally endangered species or golden eagle use on the lease tract. -
We have no objection to the continued operation of the mine. We appreciate the
opportunity to comment on the Bear Coal Company Mine Plan. If you have any
questions, please call me or Rick Krueger at the Grand Junction Field Office:
(FTS 322-0351). ® n
cc: Bear Coal Company a!
Somerset, CO 81434
Jim Ferguson, BLM, Montrose, CO
Rick Sherman, DO'a, Montrose, CO ,
J
I
~ 11

~
~
I l
l
I
l
i~
N i. i '~'~!
