Reclamation Division Room 215 For WFldlije- For People I'm Sorry you were unable to be present at the meeting at the Senica mine but I understand changing of priorities. I spent most of the day touring the two mines. We walked a lot of the property that has already been reclaimed and spent a lot of time discussing goals for the area. I am not impressed with their success with reclaiming shrubs but they appear willing to continue to try to improve. At least they have tried a few things. The main item of discussion was how to improve on survival of shrubs. We talked a lot about shrub clump establishment by mature transplants and the Senica people agreed to look further into this technique. We also discussed strip plantings where same areas would be planted only with shrubs to reduce competition and hopefully increase shrub survival. We talked about orazing as a tool and looked at the area they are currently grazing and the preliminary results there. We talked about the Rotoclear machine and the early Successes with that approach and they are going to try to meet with the people from P&M Coal Co. and see the machine in operation and evaluate that. We talked about selective use of herbicides, tillage with some kind of small machine or other experimental approaches to increasing shrub survival. We also talked about a more holostic approach to wildlife management with such techniques as brush piles. rock piles, water development, bird perches ect. and the possibilities of some reduction in stem density requirements if all parties involved might agree to a plan. I didn make any committments or promises other than to agree to work with them if they wanted to try to put together a proposal to you.
