CO[AttADO DE1'AIiTTIF.NT OF~LTti * III II IIIIIIIIII I III
~ Division or S=ction of RADIATION CONTROL ~'~
. -
INTER-O1'F1CE COIJ~UPlICA1'ION
OCT 251982
TO Schw~ze~el~~,k~les DATI? October 20, 1982
Ft:OM: Ak(ie.~/,~(./i ali~~7(151rector
SUIiJIiC1': Fiel ~NS tLAND RECLAMATION
~o ~. t~'pt. of Natural Resources
On October 12, 1982, Dick Gamewell and myself, and Sim McArdle and Jay
Lucas from MLR, visited the Schwartzwalder nine facilities in preparation
for the public meeting on the Departments' proposed radioactive materials
license.
As Gamewell and Hazle arrived 10 minutes before the scheduled meeting
time at the ore transfer pad, they walked the pad area to observe
current conditions. The area drained well but the concrete cucbin3
(3 sides) was not yet in place. Also the present concrete pad could
not be seen due to the cover of ore. The ore stored currently was not
separated as to fines or concentrates as the sign indicated but this
is not a concern of the regulating agencies. Materials present di~i
not indicate a dusting problem.
Gamewell and Hazle also walked to the top of the hill to the east ~~E the
pad to observe the lay of the land. Upon the arrival of tl~e MLR
representative we proceeded to the facilities at the mine.
After checking in at the mine office, we were joined by Larry Van
Laningham, Mine Superintendent, and Ka ran North. The first operatlon
visited was the ore sorter. Ear protectors (plugs) were provided to
all.
All aspects of the ore sorter were observed in operation, i.e., input
ore, screening, crushing, wasting, sorting, out puts, sump and shoe
area. The ore sorter water is recycled several months and then put
through the waste water treatment plant. Fresh water and any make-up
water comes from Pond 115. According [o North, all measurements made
within the facility for radon, dust concentrations, alpha and gamma
are all well below applicable standards. This operation is also under
the jurisdiction of MSHA.
After leaving the sorter we walked the road to the west. The fenc~=_
separating the parking lot from the facility is to be removed and [he
height of the dike increased for flood protection purposes. The
three earthen ponds were in operation but a growth of bullrushes
were very much in evidence. The liquid in Pond 115 was clear. The
concrete settling basins were in operation with a manifold operating
at the inlet to Pond 111 to provide a uniform application of the
incoming liquid to the basin and preclude channeling. The current
waste water treatment plant was in operation for the removal of
radium (Barium Sulfate precipitation with additives - resins).
The new sand filter and Ion Exchange building is rapidly being completed
along with the attendant clarifier and surge tank. Current estimates
for the facility start up is in November but no later than December 1,
according to North. Shake down will probably take several months.
gnature
P.D BUS-29 (10-29-100)
