F~C1'1: Ir'L ~CZS%FN ~ TO~KCr1iC~ FAX ~ PCG :9. .553 0~__,-;t ?.1
manipulation of these materials should be done when cold (4'C} to minimize loss
of volatiles.
7.3.1 Pre-weigh the (evacua*.ac'J filtrata collection container
(see Step 4.6) and set aside. !f using a TEDIAR~ bag, express all liquid
from the ZHE device into the boa, whether for the initial or final
liquidjsolid separation, and take an aliquot from the liquid in the bay
for analysis. The containers listed fn Step 4.6 are recommended for use
under the conditions stated in Stops 4.6.1-4.6.3.
7.3.2 Place the ZHE piston within the body of the ZHE (it may be
helpful first to moisten the pisten 0-rings slightly with extraction
fluid). Adjust the piston within the ZHE body to a height that will
minimize the distance the piston will have to move cote the ZHE is charged
with sample (based upon sample size requirements determined from Step 7.3,
Step 7.1.1 and/or 7.1.Z). Secure the gas inlet/outlet flange (bottom
flange) onto the ZHE body in accordance with the manufacturer's
instructions. Secure the glass fiber filter between the support screens
and set aside. Set liquid inlet/cutlet flange (top flange) aside.
7.3.3 If the sample is 100': solid (see Step 7.1.1), weigh out
a subsample (25 gram maximum) of the waste, record weight, and proceed to
Step 1.3.5,
1.3.4 If the sample contains <0.5'/o dry solids (Step 1.1.2), the
liquid portion of waste, after filtration, is defined as the 1312 extract.
Filter enough of the sample so that the amount of filtered liquid will
support all of the volatile analyses required. Far samples containing
i0.5%: dr•y solidi (Steps 1.1.1 and/or 7.1.2), use the percent solids
information obtained in Step 1.1.1 to determine the optimum. sample size to
charge into the ZHE. The recommended sample size is as follows:
7.3.4.1 For samples Containing <5: solids (see Stap
7.1.1), weigh out a 500 gram subsample of waste and record the
weight.
7.3.4.2 For wastes containing >S;b solids (see Step
7.1.1}, determine the amount of waste to charge into the ZNE as
follows:
Height of waste to charge ZHE
percent solids (Step 7.1.1)
25
x 100
Neigh out a subsample of the waste of the appropriate size and
record the weight.
7.3.5 If particle-size reduction of the solid portico of the
sample was required in Step 7.1.3, proceed to Step 7.3.6. If particle-
size reduction was not required in Step 7.1.3, proceed to Step 7.3.1.
7.3.6 Prepare the sample for extraction by crushing, cutting, or
grinding the solid portion of the waste to a surface area or particle size
1312 - 14 Revision 0
November 1492
