The material was contained on site by using approximately
102 tons of crusher fines to absorb the spilled material. The absorbent material was excavated, along
with approximately 480 tons of soil that was also potentially affected by the spill. All of the excavated
material was relocated to Lafazge's Stromquist Asphalt plant (located adjacent to the Cottonwood Pit)
where it will be run through the plant to make hot mix asphalt. All spilled material was contained on
site and no potential impacts to ground or surface water were observed. Oil-only booms were placed
before the closest mine dewatering pump area as a precautionary measure but no sheen has been
observed. The entire azea where the spill occurred will be mined within the next eight months for sand
and gravel deposits. Soil samples were taken in the excavated area and the only detectable amount was
260 ppm for motor oil, which is below the Oil Inspector Section risk based analysis screening level for
TPH less than 500 ppm (lab results enclosed for your review).
There was no evidence that surrounding soils were negatively impacted as the excavations were more
than adequate to capture potentially affected areas. The oil did not enter a waterway, ditch or storm
sewer, and it did not contact any surface water bodies or ground water.
Lafarge is aware of its responsibility to protect the environment and believes that an appropriate response
was taken to minimize the impact of this incident. If you have any further questions regarding this
incident, please call me at (303) 657-4148 at your earliest convenience.
Si cerely, ^~
V
'Me Nulty
Env' ental Manager
CC: CR Herro -Lafarge
Denny Ellsworth -Lafarge
Tammy Stevens -Lafarge
file
Kevin Moore - Lafage
Jo iar^h-Lafarge
Kathleen Sullivan-DMG ~`
LAFARGE NORTH AMERICA INC.
