As you are aware,
the operator of the mine, western Slope Carbon, Inc. failed to meet
the regulatory requirements for an extended period of time. This
failure to comply resulted in revocation of the mining permit and
forfeiture of the reclamation performance bond being held by the
Division. As part of the reclamation process, the Division needs
to provide notification of the impending reclamation work to all
surface owners of the area to be reclaimed. Information at the
Gunnison County Courthouse indicated that a majority of the surface
area to be reclaimed is owned by Somerset Mining Company.
The reclamation work involved includes regrading of the remaining
coal material, topsoil replacement, revegetation, sediment pond
removal, channel reconstruction and sealing and plugging four (4)
methane gas wells. Enclosed, please find a map depicting the
location of the methane qas wells. If Somerset Mining Company is
currently using these wells for their operations, or has an
interest in .using these wells in the near future, please contact me
as soon as possible.
The work is scheduled to begin in late September and proceed until
early November. If you have any questions regarding this
reclamation job, please do not hesitate to call me at 866-3567.
Sincerely,
l,~"v~"•, ~'
Erica S.
