MLRB
Page 2
a body of water so that the dredge could function properly. This change
in our plan effected our reclamation effort and, of course, postponed it
until a later date.
In conjunction with the aforementioned, we felt the best utilization of
the property available was to extract the mineable substance to the
property line separating the two partials. We felt that this could be
accomplished by extracting up to the fence line which would give us the
control as to the amount of materials removed for royalty purposes.
Because of the dredge operation and deep extraction, we have difficulty
handling the spoils left from the operation. In order that we did not
create immense unsightly stockpiles that had to be rehandled, we worked
in agreement with the Pinewood Estates owners to remove a portion of this
material from the site and, in turn, we would replace it if we mined
the Sandy Acres partial to the north. Please find enclosure relating
to the tons of material removed to date. The total tons of topsoil re
moved should equate to approximately 8,000 c.y. It was also agreed with
the Pinewood Estates owners that we would leave a finished sandy beach
measuring 50' wide and approximately 6' above the high water line be-
tween the two properties. This would be built out of spoils and would
allow a very nice beach for both properties.
By calculating the total disturbed area in accordance with the plans,
this would indicate approximately 28,000 yards of topsoil removal.
Pinewood Estates' requirements for topsoil relate to a topsoil depth
between 6"and 12". By analyzing the test information available, it would
appear that. a depth of 8" of topsoil material would be available from
the site. Therefore, in calculating a re placement depth of 8", this would
indicate that we need approximately 10,000 c.y. to re-topsoil the dis-
turbed areas. The amount, however, available from the disturbed areas
would calculate out of approximately 28,000 yards. Sheet 8, Item 6, of
the drawings states, "Where topsoil is removed, sufficient arable soil
is to be set aside for respredding of the excavated area." The plans
also indicate that 6"to 12" will be replaced. Our calculations, there-
fore, are based on a depth of 8". Please refer to the enclosed topsoil
exhibit which was prepared by our Field Superintendent, Joe Weaver. He
was unaware of other topsoil piles within the area and also the topsoil
that has been left in the areas undisturbed. Equating these calculations
to the property, we find almost 13,000 c.y. of topsoil available for
reclamation purposes. Comparing this amount with the approximate require-
ment of 10,000 yards at 8" deep verifies that there is, in fact, suf-
ficient topsoil available on the site for reclamation.
Simple calculations on the Sandy Acres property indicate a total topsoil
depth of about 24". Plans refer to a replacement depth of topsoil be-
tween 8 to 12". Giving consideration to the fact that a large area of
Sandy Acres will be lake, there will be an abundance of topsoil left over
on Sandy Acres that can be transported to Pinewood Estates if necessary.
