TEMPORARY CESSATION NOTICE
-SOMERSET MINE
Introduction
Raiser Coal Corporation purchased the Somerset Mine from U.S.
Steel Corporation and its wholly owned subsidiary, U.S. Steel
Mining Company, Inc. in December 1985. The Somerset Mine,
which first opened in .1902, produced approximately 900,000
tons of metallurgical grade coal in 1985. U.S. Steel Mining
Company, Inc. announced closure of the mine just prior to the
Raiser purchase. Raiser will be seeking markets for the
remaining coal reserves, in hope of reopening the mine within
the next few years. Until such time the mine will exist in a
state of temporary cessation.
Temoorar~Cessation Activities
The present management entity for the mine property is Raiser
Coal Corporation and the name of the mine will remain the
Somerset Mine. The individual who should be contacted at the
Somerset Mine regarding permit compliance is Mr. Pete
Palacios, P.O. Box 576, Somerset, CO 81434. His telephone
number is (303) 929-5115.
Security, 24 hours per day, seven days per week, is provided
at the mine on a contract basis.
In the next few months numerous pieces of equipment will be
removed from the mine and trucked from the property. The
remaining equipment may be moved around in an effort to
consolidate that equipment.
Maintenance activities for ditches, culverts, sedimentation
ponds, fences, signs and markers will be performed, as
necessary.
Hydrologic monitoring will continue in accordance with the
Colorado mining permit No. C-022-81 and NPDES permit No.
0000132.
In the near future, Raiser Coal may take steps to reclaim some
of the surface facilities sites which are located on the
federal coal lease properties held by U.S. Steel Corporation.
Raiser Coal did not acquire the federal coal leases from U.S.
Steel as part of the sale and, therefore, has no intent to use
some of the facilities and land located thereon. Federal
right-of-way applications for these facilities which will be
utilized by Raiser are currently under review by the Bureau of
Land Management in Montrose, Colorado.
