The total area reseeded in the winter of 1990/91 vas 8.0 acres. It must be pointed out
that the fill slope faces directly to the south and never really had any topsoil salvaged
since it .vas apre-la~v disturbance. The lower portal area faces southwest and also vas
replaced with the best material we could find on the site.
What level of perennials should we try to attain on these areas?
I researched the previous vegetation study done by Western Resource Development
Corporation of Boulder, Colorado in 1983. Unfortunately, the entire study .vas done
for the undisturbed area south of the existing disturbance. The permit plans at that time
were for a huge complex of facilities, stockpiles and train loading station in this area.
The existing pre-law disturbance vas not even mentioned.
Picture #1 (April 8, 1995) shows the south facing slope immediately west of the
reclaimed area. Although the picture. is not close enough to see ground detail, I believe
eve can all agree that these south-facing slopes have very little total cover and even less
perennial cover. Visits into adjacent canyons showed no real differences. The
foreground area is our reclaimed coal stockpile site.
Picture 1 -Adjacent natural south-facing slope (April 8, 1995)
2
