Its contents are not to tie inter- <br />. preted by the.aQplicant or DEQ staff as mandatory. Its preparation is the <br />result of numerous requests from applicants who have expressed a c.eed for <br />a check-list to.~ssist them in preparation of a comprehensive application <br />,containing all required information. <br />I. OBJECTIVES i <br />The olijectives~of the baseline radiological survey and sampling are to: <br />,~ , <br />1. Establish tlie.,nature of the pre-mining radiological environment. <br />2. Detect and document areas having anomalous radiation. <br />3. Establish pre-mining concentratiocis:of radiopuclides in the surface <br />materials of tt~e.lands to be affected in order to establish a goal <br />for recYamation:, - _. <br />II. GAMMA SURVEY-METHODS ', <br />The.gamma~survey shoul¢'be used to determine the pre-mining r,;diologi- <br />cal environment. _:~e following methods are recommended. <br />1. The suivep.=should be~conducted using-a grid system where. ;readings <br />are recoided:~sat,no.greater Chan 500 foot intervals. Pacing of <br />these=3ist.$ncgs is.sufficient. - _ - <br />2. The survey"stiquld •also consist of a;"scan method" where rf;adings <br />are'noted`~.Between•.the 500_foot intePia3s:- In this way radiological <br />anomalies~irltl.be detected. If such anomalies are found, they <br />should be~preci9ely de€i~fed as'to:ldcation and extent. <br />3. Readings should be taken with a'scintil2ometer or similar device <br />held apprgximaCely three feet above the ground. <br />4. Results of the survey should be plotted and•isopleths.constructed <br />on a pre-mining topographic map of the survey area..- See II,apping <br />requirements in Guidelirt'e 6.
