It
is believed that the petition has been misrepresented by Mr.
Moschner.
When the petition was presented to the citizens of Somerset for
signatures, it was done so with the understanding that our
signatures were for showing support for Mr. Moschner's effort to
control the dust from the Bear Coal Company trucks and to discuss
our concerns with Bear Coal Company officials.
After the circulation of the petition was completed, it was found
that Mr. Moschner had at no time contacted any of Bear Coal
Company's officials. He then started talking about sending the
petition on to the Governor's office. Mr. Moschner was asked by
Mr. Jim Ellis not to send the petition, but rather call a
community meeting and ask Bear Coal Company if they would send a
representative from the company to the meeting. This would give
the people of Somerset and the mine an opportunity to meet
together for discussing the community's concerns. At that point
Mr. Moschner agreed.
A meeting was held September 20, 1990. There were approximately
20 community members and three representatives from Bear Coal
Company present. The Channel 7 News Crew from Denver was also
there. During the meeting there were numerous suggestions by the
community on possible ways to help control the dust. Bear Coal
Company representatives stated that many of the suggestions were
already being implemented and others were in the process.
The meeting was overall a very positive one between Bear Coal
Company and the majority of the community members.
