This will be the second year of
sampling. They sampled using in-house personnel last year. This yeaz they have chosen to
contract the sampling out to an independent contractor. In 1997 cover data was collected using a
10-pt. Frame. The contractor this year proposes to use a 10-pt. laser "point baz" to collect the
vegetative data. Use of the 10-pt. Laser point bar will simulate the method used with the 10-pt.
frame.
I have copied the portions of the Eckman Park permit that discuss sampling methodology and
determination of success. I have included copies of the seedmix used. The approved post-
mining land use is Pastureland. No woody stem standard is required so will not be sampled by
Colorado Yampa Coal Company. You may want to look at the strip seeding that Colorado
Yampa Coal Company used and we can discuss the potential for Division of Minerals and
Geology to conduct sampling of the woody stems. Rick Mills seemed like he would be
amenable to Division of Minerals and Geology. I included the Rangeland seedmix since that is
what they actually seeded area 41 with.
I am including the contractors description of sampling methodology. I discussed this with Rick
Mills in the field on June 16, 1998. I did not see a problem with Habitat Management's
proposal. I did ask Rick about the absence of discussion on productivity data collection.
Productivity data will be collected, it just wasn't discussed in the letteR.
I an also providing you with the Eckman Park inspection package to provide you with maps.
You will probably want to look at the Reclami3tion map since it defines the extent of Area 41,
and gives seeding dates.
Thank you for being able to adjust your schedule to pick this one up. Please let me know if [can
reciprocate.
