l
• •
Steamboat Valley Road is used presently by one quarry operation whose right to use the road can
be traced to our deed easements. There is no mention of this right for the Loukonen Brothers'
operation in any of the deed information we have found.
The quarry operation mentioned above only uses Steamboat Valley Road occasionally in contrast
to what we have been told will be daily and frequent use by Loukonen trucks. This use is of great
concern to us because of the nature of land uses along Steamboat Valley Road. Once a very
spazsely populated valley, the area has changed in recent years to become residential. This is
particularly true as Steamboat Valley Road approaches Lyons. Seven new houses have been built
along the road -many at the comer of Steamboat Valley Road and Fifth Avenue in Lyons. Last
year, Lyons annexed property on both sides of Steamboat Valley Road for approximately 32 more
new homes. We have been told that other e.Yisting properties along the road are also being
considered for residential development. These new and proposed land uses along the road make
it very inappropriate for use as a quarry haul road. - -
Steamboat Valley Road is a narrow, mostly one-lane dirt road which cannot accommodate heavy
traffic. There are few turnouts or widened areas available and conflicts with the large quarry
trucks are inevitable. We believe the situation is and will continue to be very dangerous for
resident traffic. The road is also subject to rapid deterioration from heavy truck traffic. It
"washboards" quickly from the loaded and unloaded trucks bouncing over it. In addition, it
washes out frequently in heavy rains - a situation compounded by any deep ruts in the road caused
by the trucks.
This is not a case where we are trying to change long-established operations in the area. We have
lived with quarry activities azound us without complaim. This new use, however, is different .
because of its unprecedented nature, its scale of operation, frequency, potential danger, and
potential for damage to our road. We object to and oppose strongly this unauthorized and
inappropriate effort to change the utilization of this trail and Steamboat Valley Road.
We appreciate your consideration of this matter and we hope you will contact us directly if we
can be of any assistance or if there are any questions.
Sincerely, ~~
~i/St en K. and . onna G.
