In summary, ve believe that the OSM plan to fill
the subsidence holes with material that would need to be transported a
minimum of "ten miles is simply a waste of money. The other objections are
not significant at this time.
We have just finished filling the vent hole ourselves, thereby saving
considerable funds and also making the area safe at least ten days sooner.
Because the Rex Carbon portal is not on our lands, ve must rely on the
observations of others. It is reported "that".the Rex Carbon. portal is not
sealed and that access 3s prevented only by a grate. Bruce Stover and Phil
Kessler believe that there is often a considerable draft through that
portal. Today, there vas a large plume of eater condensate from the
vicinity of that portal, and the fire vent hole vas taking in air instead
of exhausting. When ve sealed the vent hole, the plume disappeared. We
believe that the Rex Carbon portal interconnects~vith the various abandoned
mines .to the north and that it should be sealed.
Thank you for your concern,
W.D. Corley, Jr.
President
