Grist: <br />After inspection this morning of your orchard (with particular, detailed <br />att~:itien to t!ie one year old J. II. Hale trees), several observation:, can <br />be made. <br />1) Of ttie three sites planted vrith J. H. tale peaches i~ 1937, the site <br />in the northwest corner of the orchard does indeed have the poorest first <br />year yro~rtli and lead nearly all the trees that died last year. <br />2) i!r^ trees in tha': northwest corner (both one year old J. H. Hale trees <br />planted in the other two sites in 1907 is reasonable--!gut no ;: outstanJin;. <br />This sugnests tlw t these factors influenc~iny first year tree y,•~:~fth ;aa~ 'r-,ve <br />been less titan ideal in 1787, In that case, an ad iitional stra:s "actor <br />(such as excessive dust) would quite likely hurt tree cro;,~th, possibly even <br />to the point of killing a young *_ree since its reserves are less than those <br />of a more mature, established tree. <br />4) You observed excessive flower sheddin3 in the adjacent three rows of <br />Cresthaven peach trees (immediately to the east of the J. Ii. Hale tree.) <br />to be associated with a heavy dust accumulation on the trees early last <br />season.
