Welt
Environmental Specialist
RE: FOUNDATION DESIGN CRITERIA FOR PROPOSED
200,000 GALLON WATER STORAGE TANK
Dear Kathy:
This letter summarizes the foundation design and drainage
recommendations for the proposed 200,000 gallon water tank
to be constructed close to the new portal of the rchard
Valley mine. We understand that the water storage tank wi
be cons ructed from steel; have a diameter of 39 feet and a
height of 29 feet.
We also understand that the tank will be constructed near
the boring DH-81. At this location, approximately 15 to 20
feet of colluvium can be expected. The colluvium consists
of a stiff clay with basalt boulders. The clay underlying
the tank may be saturated.
Using the strength parameters already developed for the
colluvial soils at the mine bench an allowable bearing
capacity of 2,700 pounds per square foot was calculated.
The loading from the tank will be approximately 1,500 pounds
per square foot. Therefore, the allowable bearing capacity
for this soil exceeds the maximum tank loading.
No consolidation test data is available on the colluvial
soils in the vicinity of the tank. Therefore, a quantita-
tive estimate of the settlement beneath the tank cannot be
made. However because a factor of safety of three was used
to calculate the allowable bearing capacity and because the
actual loading imposed by the tank will be only approximate-
ly one half of the allowable bearing capacity, it is our
opinion that settlement beneath the tank w~~ be within
tolerable limits.
GOLUEFI ASSOCUTS$ ING ^]01 W COLFA% AvEN UE SURE 2)5 GOLDEN IGENVE RI COLORADO BOJ01 U 5 A ~ TEiE PI+ONE OOJI P8~866d
OI iICFS IN f.ANA NA •IIN IiFO STAiFS ~ IIN Ii FfI NINf:f1f14 AI iQ RAi ie
