Box 15596
Lakewood, Colorado 80215
RE: New Elk Mine, C-012-81, Thickener Overflow
Dear Mr. Stout:
The Division is aware that some overflow from the thickener plant is occurring
on a regular basis. We understand this is a temporary situation resulting
from inbalances in your preparation system and that installation of a fine
coal processing circuit should rectify the situation and create the desired
closed circuit system.
The overflow is now being routed to pond 006, which we feel is the most
prudent treatment at this stage. You must coordinate with the Colorado
Department of Health if release of water from this pond becomes necessary.
Also, close communication with this Division should be maintained to inform us
of any unforeseen problems that arrive while fine-tuning of the preparation
facility is on-going.
If you have any questions, please call.
Sincerely,
Candace M.
