Swainson's Hawk Nest Relocation
Pursuant to the requirements of the above-referenced permit, pleaze accept this letter and the enclosed photographs
az the fast annual report.
The subject Swainson's Hawk nest located in Section 26, T6N, R91 W, Moffat County, Colorado was protected
with no mine-related disturbance allowed within a nest buffer zone until the single nestling fledged on August 2,
1993. The Fledgling was observed flying within several hundred yards of the nest on August 2nd and again on
August 3rd. It was not definitively observed after August 3rd.
The nest was moved by the Trapper Mine Environmental Quality crew on August 4th. The nest was moved by
cutting at the base of the small Gambel's Oak vee the nest was built in, and relocating the tree with nest intact to an
oak patch in Section 35, T6N, R91 W, Moffat County, Colorado, similar in size and structure [o the original patch.
The nest tree was wired securely into the new patch of oak. Enclosed are photos of the original nest (slides) and of
the relocated nest (prints). During the nest move, the adult Swainson's Hawk pair came from an unknown location
and swooped aggressively for several minutes at the personnel working on the relocation. Surprisingly, they dis-
played this aggressive territorial behavior despite the juvenal having fledged two days previous.
The general territories of the original nest area and the nest relocation area will be monitored during the 1994 and
1995 breeding seasons for Swainson's Hawk nesting activity. An annual report detailing any nesting activity and
behavior to mine-related activities will be submitted by November IS of each year. Should any future nesting
starts located within mine conflict areas occur, the USFWS-CFWESO in Grand Junction, Colorado will be
immediately contacted.
Pleaze contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
- ~L~l
_,~~~:.
Forrest V.
