Box 670 <br />Hayden, CO 81639 <br />Contact: Roy Karo <br />(970) 276-5217 <br />Seneca Coal Company operates the Seneca II, Seneca II-W and Yoast Mines in Routt County. <br />Seneca Coal Company began coal production in 1968. Mining permanently ceased in January <br />2006 at the Seneca II-W and Yoast Mines. Since then SCC has backfilled/graded 352 acres to <br />close all pits and mining areas. <br />Final reclamation at the Seneca II-W and Yoast Mines culminates many years of research, <br />experimentation and trial/error at the Seneca mine complex. Revegetation highlights include <br />on-site aspen sapling "harvest" and transplanting, establishment of tall shrub and aspen plantings <br />in snow accumulation azeas, drip irrigation for establishment of aspen and tall shrubs, deep soil <br />replacement (4 feet) for aspen plantings, inclusion of big sagebrush in standazd upland seed <br />mixes, combined seedling plantings and shrub/forb seedings within large elk fenced exclosures, <br />and continual refinement of seed mixes.
