APPENDIX C: NARRATIVE
The Myrin pit is located 2 miles northwest of Toponas on State Highway 131 and Yz mile south of the
highway. The pit is on private ground which is owned by AI Fisher of 273 Ridge Road, Grosse
Poiute, MI 48236 (see attached lease agreement).
The pit is a high terrace of sand and gravel with soil overburden. The gravel is approximately 30 feet
deep and the soil overburden is approximately 2 feet deep. Vegetation on the site consists of brush
and grass.
T-he~pit-has'been used since abiiout 192 by both the county and the state for highway maintenance
work in the area. Historically the pit has been used for several weeks during the summer (7 am to 5
pm) when CDOT Maintenance has the time and resources available. The use of the pit has been
minimal in the past years and expected to remain minimal for years to come. The main use of the
materials removed from the pit is to add embankment to the shoulder along State Highway 131. This
shoulder material allows vehicles veering off the roadway to have a recoverable area in which to
regain control and thus improving the safety of the roadway. The Department of Transportation
hopes to use the pit fer maintenance in Routt County along State Highway 131 in upcoming years to
improve the safety of the roadway.
The mining operation consists of stripping and stockpiling the soil overburden and excavating the
sand and gravel. On site equipment consists of D6 Dozer, 3 yard Loader, and approximately ten
tandem haul trucks.
Drainage control shall be affected by grading the site to localize low points within the pit boundary.
Stormwater runoff will drain to these low points, and the runoff will drain into the grouhd. A local seep
exists within the site. Drainage from this seep, estimated to run at 0.02 cubic feet per second (about
10 gallons per minute) will be allowed to leave the site.
Reclamation will consist of grading the slopes to 3 to 1 or flatter, and grading the floor so that no low
spots exist. Alf disturbed areas wilt be covered with soil overburden, fertilized, seeded and mulched.
_ This reclamation will be done on areas of the pit_in which work_is completed._, _ _ _
This pit has minimal impacts on residents, wildlife and ecosystem due to its remote location and
limited use. The Department of Transportation will continue to utilize best management practices for
grading and erosion control to maintain the natural environment. Mitigation for the Greater Sage
Grouse will be as discussed on the cover letter per the Division of Wildlife recommendations.
Please see attached maps and DMG application for additional information regarding roads, drainage,
stockpile location and reclamation.
