III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
999
DATE: October 31, 1997
TO: Kent Gorham
FROM: Erica Crosb
RE: Eastside Mine (C-84-063)
Reclamation Awazd- Reclaimed Mine
Kent, I would like to nominate the Eastside Mine (C-84-063) for the DMG/CMA coal
reclamation award in the reclaimed mine category.
The Eastside mine, operated by Eastside coal Company, is located in Garfield County
approximately 3.5 miles north of the town of Silt, Colorado. The Eastside mine was an
underground mine that operated between 1984 and 1995 extracting up to 200,000 tons of coal.
The operator revised the reclamation plan in 1995 to blend the disturbed area into the existing
topography but at the same time maintain the integrity of the mine and provide access to the
scoria pit. No topsoil was available to reclaim the site, but the operator used the existing soils in
the portal azea as a topsoil substitute.
1997 is the second yeaz of successful vegetation at the mine. Vegetation consists of yellow
sweet clover, western wheat grass, intermediate wheat grass, Indian rice grass, penstemmon,
finged and silver sage, four-wing saltbrush, and big sage. The slopes aze stable, and there are no
erosion problems on site. Attached is a copy an aerial photograph of the mine in operation and
reclaimed.
The operator filed a timely application for a Phase I bond release that was approved on
December 14, 1995. A Phase [I application will likely be submitted next year.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Enclosure
cc: Larry Routten
c:\esc\misc\971031
