Pursuant to Title 34, Article 33, of the Colorado Revised StatutES, the Division of Minerals and
Gleology hereby issues notice that on Juae 18, 1995, as application to revise a peratit to conduct coal
minitrg operations by Mountain Coal Company, P.O. Box 591, Somerset, Colorado 81434, was deemed
complete for the proposes of filing. All reviews and comment periods as pravidod in the Act and
Regulations promulgated thereunder initiate from this day of filing.
The subject permit revision addresses the addition of approximately 2,500 acres of Federal Coal Lease
• C-1362 and COC-56447 to the Weat fi1k Mine permit area. The additional area is in Gunnison Couaty
and is described ae follows: Section 23, Lots 14-16; Ser-lion 24, W'i4 Lot 13; Section 25, W'h WS4
W'h; Sections 26-28; Section 24, Lota 5-11 and S'fi Slh of Lots 12-14; Section 30; Section 34, NEl4;
and Section 35, N~7 Lots 1-3, Township 13 South, Range 90 Weat of the 6th P.M. This area is
located on the USGS 7,5 mirntte Somerset quadrangle topographic maps.
The underground coal mining operation is located in Della sad Gunnison Counties, approximately one
mile east of Somerset, Colorado. The current permit area is described as follows: Sections 9, 10, 15
to 22, 26 to 30, and 34, Township 13 South, Range 90 West of the 6t13 P.M.; and Sections 23 to 26,
Township 13 South, Range 91 West of the 6th P.M. 7.'tlese tracts of land are shows on USGS 7.5
minute quadrangle maps of Soterset and Bowie.
Because the above referenced permit revision application would incorporate additional leads into the
permit area or might otherwise alter previously approved permit conditions or mitigation measures, we
are requesting your agency's evaluation of the potential For impacts to cultural and historic resources.
In order for us to approve this revision, we are required to make a finding that "the proposed
operations will n+ot adversely affect any publicly owned park or place listed on or those places eligible
Por listing, as determined by the SHPO, on the National Register of Historic Places, unless approved
jointly by the Board and the Federal, State, or local agrncy with jurisdiction over the park or place".
We request your evaluation and wr7currence is order to make this finding, pursuant to the May, 1991,
MOU between our agencies. Please refer to the MOU when undertaking your review.
