. ~ page 9
Species diversity in both reference areas will be determined
by estimating the number of species present by life form in
.each vegetation type. This information will be obtained from
the cover data collected in the ri~o reference areas. The
results will be surrrnarized and presented in tabular form in
the final report.
7. liven the high density of oak over much of the permit area,
the difficulty oC achieving corrgx~rable densities, and the nurrr~ous
benefits of establishing predcminantely herbaceous vegetation on
reclaimed areas in terms of habitat interspersion, increased
edge effect, and site stabilization, a request to reclaim the
Hawk's Nest Mine Permit Area to a lesser d~sity of shrub species
has been made. The lesser density prolx~sed is presented in
the resixnse to 2.04.20(1) 9.15, Vcr~et:ation Information.
2.05.4(2) Disposal of Debris, Acid and Toxic Forming Methods
See attached memo.
2.05.5 Post Mining Land Use
See attached letter from BUt.
2.05.6(2) Fish and Wildlife Plan
See attached letter fran Rick Sherman.
2.05.6(3) Protection of the hydrologic Balance
We already have a mrmitoring program in effect. hcnaever, we are
in the process of m<idifying it to include all parameters asked in
the corm~ent.
2.05.6(6) Subsidence
The subsidence nnnitoring program at h~stern Slope Carbon, Inc.
Hawk's Nest Plines consist of gun stations (instrurtr_nt rrounting loca-
tion) and subsidence nnnitorinq points. Since much of WSC's property
is inaccessible to any kind of vehicle these points are cronstructed
by hand.
The gun locations consist of a 48" long pipe, set 18" in concrete.
The 4" pipe has a flat plate on the top of it which is marked to
indicate the precise location of the instrurn?nt. Subsidence rtnnitor-
ing points A thru N and 1 thiv 6 consist of 5/8" rebar, 48" long
driven 29" into the ground. This style of subsidence rmnitoring point
was necessary due to the inaccessible and rxtsemely hilly terrain over
which the suF~sidence points are located. ,Siil>siclence points a thru
i consist of l/[" rcbar set 24" into the ground with a piece of.
orange conduit sleeved over Che 1/2" rebar. These points are located
50'-100' north of the hig}rv~ay which places thin between 50' and 100'
vertically above the higYraay so they are protectcr3 against vehicle
traffic.
