The comments we made earlier,
which ware inducted with this application, are still valid as the proposal is esserrtialy identipl to
the previous plan. A few additional points:
The setback distance from the South Platte River is a signfiCarrt factor- ff mining is kept
balk 400' as is Currently proposed, the impacts from the planned work should easily be
mitigated for by the wetland creation project on the east side of the river. ff doser
encroachment occurs, there will be signficartt removal of trees from the riparian corridor
along the west river bank In that event, we would suggest additional mitigating measures -
planting of native cottonwoods/willows in the remaining riparian zone and removal of
livestocc grazing in the riparian zone.
The plan for the wetland in Parcel B is confusing. One part of the application indicates that
no open water will result, but one of the maps clearly stwws an open water area. We feel
that the wetland would be more valuable io wildlife with an open water Component. Since
some open.water in the wrTent wetlar-d wi8 be lost, we suggest that a1 t~si an equal
amount of open water be replaced.
The wildlife section slightly overstates the value of the new reservoirs to waterfow4, but Ibis is
not a significant point
• The plan to leave the trees al the south end of Parcel A is excellent!
Please let me know if you have any questions.
May 17~ 8:15 III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Greg Walther, Executive Director
WILDLIFE GOMMISStON, Chuck Lewis, Chairman • Mark LeValley.
