III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII <br />Mountain Coal Company <br />West Elk Mine <br />Post Office Box 591 <br />Somerset, Colorado 81434 <br />Telephone 970.929-5015 <br />May 8, 1998 <br />RECEIVED <br />P1AY 13 1998 <br />Division of Minerals 3 Geology <br />Mr. Michael Boulay <br />Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology <br />1313 Sherman Street, Room 215 <br />Denver, CO 80203 <br /> <br />RE: Geotechnical Drilling Program at Sylvester Gulch Substation; <br />- - -West Elk Mine; Permit No.-C-80-007 - -_ <br />Dear Mike: <br />In keeping with Mountain Coal Company's (MCC) commitments made in Permit <br />Revision No. 7 for the Sylvester Gulch Facilities Area (SGFA) regarding slope <br />stability, MCC plans to drill six holes in the area of the Sylvester Gulch substation. <br />The purpose of this investigation is to provide MCC's consultant, Barr Engineering, <br />with additional site specific data to design permanent stabilization for the substation <br />area. <br />All six holes will be drilled in areas disturbed by the construction of the SGFA. Two <br />of the holes drilled will be utilized as inclinometers, two holes will be completed as <br />piezometers, and the last two holes will be abandoned immediately following drilling <br />in compliance with Rule 4.07.3(1) or (2). MCC will begin this drilling on or around <br />May 13, 1998.
