Received
.~
REPORT ON CURRENT SITE CONDITIONS
Sunday Mine, Permit M-1977-285.
~E8 t; 7 ?-003
afvls~ c ~ ~~Id WJreQ °9Y
The Sunday Mine is one of five permitted mines and related facilities held by the
Operator in the Big Gypsum Valley of San Miguel County, Colorado (see Figure 1, General
Location Map).
The Sunday Mine Pennit includes the Sunday Mine site, the GMG Mine site, and a
number of vent holes and related access roads located on the ridge to the south of the Sunday
Mine site. Figure 2, "Sunday Mine, Roads and Vent Holes," shows the location of the vent holes
and roads in relationship to the Sunday Mine site. Figure 3, "Sunday Mine," shows the site
details at the Sunday Mine site, and Figure 4, "GMG Mine," shows the details at the GMG Mine
site.
Roads and Vent Holes.
Figure 2 shows the location of all of the vent holes, and associated access roads, included
under the Sunday Mine Permit. Figure 2 also shows the location of a number of PreLaw vent
holes. All vent sites are described hereunder.
S-1 Vent -This vent is the westernmost of a cluster of three vent holes located just to the
east of the existing main access road up the ridge. A short access road connects this vent to the
existing main road; the access road was rough and difficult to traverse, so the Operator graded
the access road and installed water bars in November 2002. S-1 is an uncased 7' diameter up-
reamed hole. The vent has a fan on it and is grated and secure. A nearby power pole has three
transformers on it, and the transformers and the powerline to this site are the property of the
Operator. The site is generally stable, but soft, green clay from the cutbank on the uphill side of
the location is eroding onto the leveled site. This is not noted as a particular concern, as the soft
clays throughout the project area erode similarly under natural conditions. There is some sparse
weedy vegetation on the site.
S-2 Vent -This vent is located at the south edge of the Sunday Mine yard. This is a 7'
diameter hole that is covered by a steel grate welded in place. There is no fan on this hole as it
exhausts by natural upcast flow. Double power poles are located nearby, but no transformers are
present. The vent hole is surrounded by a gravel pad, and a lot of native brushy vegetation has
moved onto this site. There is no separate access road associated with S-2.
S-3 Vent -Vent S-3 is located on the crest of the main ridge above the Sunday Mine.
Access to S-3 is on a road dedicated to this site, the S-5 vent hole, and previously to the radio
tower that was located at the high point of the ridge. S-3 is an up-reamed 8' diameter hole on a
flat site excavated in maroon shale and siltstone. The location is very stable with no sloughing or
caving around the vent and no erosion from the site. The hole is covered with a fan and has a
grate welded in place. Three transformers are mounted on a nearby power pole, and the
powerline and transformers are the property of the Operator. There is no natural revegetation
occurring on this site.
