III IIIIIIIIillll III
999
STATF OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Govei
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Dlractor
June 26, 1989
U.S. Department of the Interior
Bureau of Land Management
District Office
P.0. Box 1269
Montrose, Colorado 81401
RE: Notification of State Reclamation Work on BLM Land
Dear Sir or Madam:
The State of Colorado, Mined Land Reclamation Division will be performing mine
reclamation worked on a parcel of previously disturbed BLM Land located
approximately 3 miles east of the town of Somerset, Colorado in Gunnison
County within the S 1j2, SW 1j4, NE 1/4 of Section 11, T13S, R90W. This
parcel of land is situated within a disturbed portion of the Hawk's Nest
underground coal mine site. The operator of the mine, Western Slope Carbon,
Inc., failed to comply with regulatory requirements for an extended period of
time. This failure to comply resulted in revocation of the mining permit and
forfeiture of the operator's reclamation performance bond. The bond monies
will be used by the Division to perform final reclamation work at the site
beginning in August of this year.
The Division is now in the process of notifying all affected area surface
owners of the impending reclamation work. Information contained in the
orginals Hawk's Nest Mine permit application indicated that a small portion
(approximately 2.6 acres) of the east mine area situated on the north side of
old Highway 133 is on BLM surface. The reclamation work will consist of:
1) regrading level benches, pads, and diversion ditches to
approximate original contour;
2) removing electrical equipment, powerlines, buildings, powder
magazines, fan housing, crusher and conveyor;
3) sealing 2 mine openings; and
4) revegetation.
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 802032273 Tel.
