BANTA, Director ~S?~~ ~j~
DATE: January 25, 1989
T0: Jim Stevens ^ ~
FROM: Candy Thompson ~./~
RE: Sunlight Mine C-046-81, Mine Status
Tne permit for this mine has been revoked, Inspection responsibility does not
really exist, however, the Division does inspect the mine site with a complete
each quarter. A problem that could occur on site is the ability for the
public to access the underground mine due to the gates failing at the top and
at the lower portal. The seepage out of the lower portal area drains from
that portal area down to the ditch adjacent to the Four Mile Creek. The ditch
owner has water rights on the seepage out of this portal. Therefore, this
portal cannot be hydrologically sealed during reclamation. Cracks have been
noted on the upper bench at the mine site. These were filled in and no
further movement seems to have occurred.
Reclamation plans are stalled at this time due to the fact that numerous liens
exist on the property and therefore on the structures. The mine site cannot
be reclaimed without removal of the structures. A letter has been written to
the Attorney General with enclosures of all liens found requesting him to give
us a recommendation on the direction we should now proceed on clearing these
liens.
The lower portal, as previously stated, needs to remain leaking due to the
water rights that exist on the site. A perforated pipe could be placed some
distance into the portal opening with a sorted sand sized larger than the
opening packed around the pipe to prevent clogging and create some structural
stability. Then the mine could be sealed in a normal manner.
2837F/scg
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel. (303) 866-3567
