On December 17, 1982, North Thompson Creek Mine #3 will be idled. One man will continue to work at the mine to maintain airflow and fireboss, how- ever, no production of coal will come from #3 mine. The decision to idle the mine came after we realized that we can no longer economically justify the operation of the mine during this slump in the world coal market. Also, we realized that the manpower at #3 mine could be better utilized in the development of our second longwall panel in #1 mine. As of today, the anticipated date for reopening the mine will be the winter of 1983, or the spring of 1984. However, these dates may change depending on the world coal market. Number 3 mine consists of 2.4 acres of affected surface area. The coal has been mined from the outcrop downdip approximately 1,000 feet. The lateral extent of the workings in #3 mine is approximately 3,500 feet along strike. The highest amount of overburden has been 830 feet. The surface facilities and the fan road will be maintained to accommodate the fireboss who will continue to work at #3 mine. It will be necessary to drive to #3 mine fan everyday to make a physical check of the fan because the airflow in #3 mine will be maintained at all times.
