Contact was made with state and federal agencies that have experience in working with
landslides. All have stated that it is very expensive to stabilize a landslide, if not
impassible. The best that can be done is to minimize future movement and allow the
slope to reach equilibrium. The best way to accomplish this is to divert water away from
the head of the landslide.
This project would include a diversion, or drainage ditch with drain pipe above the
landslide area to a drainage way south of the slide, filling two ponds above the
landslide, installing water bars or pipe drainage under the old coal haul road and
replace the stock water ponds with stock tanks with water piped from the solar well or
from the Yampa River area. Drain the ponded area on the landslide and aerial reseed
the landslide.
The Routt County Soil Conservation District will act as the sponsor of this watershed
protection project. They will provide the necessary landrights and permits as soon as
funding is authorized. They will be responsible for the 25% cost share. They will be
responsible for ensuring the operation and maintenance agreement is carried out on
the project.
Routt County Soil Conservation District does not have the funds, nor have they been
budgeted to work with this landslide situation.
A preliminary engineering estimate was prepared during the site review and the
estimated cost is $140,000.
Item Government Cost Sponsor Cost
Federal Assistance 3105,000 (75%) 535,000 (25%)
Technical Assistance 5 28,000
Total EWP Funds Requested 5133,000
The sponsor will greatly appreciate NRCS assistance with this project.
Step en F.
