Technical Memorandum, Anne Beierle, Henderson Mine, September 10, 2002, Page 2
Results
2.67 acres of capping were completed, and, in my opinion, a good test of the geo-
synthetic materials resulted from the construction effort.
The cost for materials as reported by Tensar representatives for BX4100 and BX4200 aze
respectively: $0.09 and $0.16 per squaze foot. Mirafi HP370 was quoted to Climax at
$0.09 per square foot (personal communication with K. Kinnazd of Bowman on 9/12/01).
A cost estimate for installing all materials can be made from information collected by
EEE, based on real-life experience at Climax during this test plot study. Based on $20
per man-hour for labor and assuming a 2-man crew for Tensar products and a 3-man
crew for Mirafi I4P370 (rolls aze too heavy for two workers to handle), the costs for
staging, laying, unrolling, anchoring with rocks, staples or ties is: (1) Tensar BX4100
and Tensaz BX4200 Installation Cost = $0.02 per square foot and (2) Mirafi HP370
Installation Cost = $0.016 per squaze foot. Transportation costs are $0.0041/ square foot
for BX4100 and $0.0069/squaze foot for BX 4200. Shipping is included in the Mirafi
cost of $0.09 /square foot number.
The total cost of material, delivery, and installation for each product is as follows
(assuming a one foot overlap between rolls and 4 feet on the ends = 7% additional
material needed):
Tensar BX4100 = $0.1141/ftZ or ($0.1141)x[43560 ftZ/ac+ (0.07x 43560)] _ $5318/ac
Tensar BX4200 = $0.1869/ftZ or ($0.1869)x(43560 ftZ/ac+ (0.07x 43560)] _ $8711/ac
Mirafi HP370 = $0.106 /ftZ or ($0.106) x [43560 ftz/ac+ (0.07x 43560)] _ $4940/ac
Summary and Recommendations
The objectives of the field study were met. That is, all three products were viable
alternatives to conventional capping. Costs for material and installation are on the order
of $4940 to $8711 per acre for the three products tested .
References
Bergado, Anderson, Miura, and Balasubramaniam. 1996.
