The native vegetation has completely died out on
approximately 5 acres and the area is increasing in size.
Upon arriving at Che site an attempt to take soil samples c,~as made.
Several sample holes were dug in thin affected area. On each of the holes
Lee and Nate encountered a dark Teri foreign substance 3-~ inches from the
surfar_e. Also encountered on Mach hole were noxious and possihle toxic
fumes.
The Spanish Peaks-Purgatoire P.iver SCD requests that you investigate this
situation immediately and inform the. hoard of any findings. We feel that
the prohlem stems from mining activity either air shaft construction or
soh-surface coal mining at the New Elk and Golden Eagle Mines.
Thanks for your prompt attention In this request.
Sinr_erely,
~~~~
Stanley S.
