Land
-Continued from: 3A
tmst by everyone from private citi-
zens and lessees to conservation
groups and local government organi-
zations. The largest single nominator
was the Colorado Division of
Wildlife, which submitted 39 sepa-
rate parcels for their importance as
wildlife habitat. Among those were
fiyt pieces of land in Routt County.
including the 4,000-acre Jimmy
Dhnn Gulch area northwest of
Hayden, the 640-acre California Park
and the 640-acre "Storm Mountain"
section in south of Toponas.
Other local parcels now in the
running For the Stewardship Tmst
were nominated by agricultural
lessees, concerned residents and even
Routt County. At one end of the size
range is the 15,000-acre Twentymile
Park area southwest of Milner, nomi-
nated by the current lessees,
Camilletti and Sons, Inc., for continu-
ation of agricultural and multiuse
recreational leases to preserve open
space, promote local agriculture and
reduce public pressure to develop the
area. At the other end are the 640-acre
Moonhill and Clark sections in North
Routt County, nominated by property
neighbor Mike Braal and lessees
Murphy Larsen Ranch, respectively,
both of whom propose continuing
agricultural and recreational leases to
preserve open space.
The most famous local nomina-
tion is Steamboat's 6,900-acre
Emerald Mountain, nominated by
Routt County through a cooperative
venture that involved agricultural
lessees, recreationists and wildlife
organizations with vested interests in
the "backdrop" to Steamboat Springs.
However famous or obscure,
though, all 130 parcels nominated
across the state are now being scruti-
nized equally in an intensive evalua-
lion process that, State Land Board
officials emphasize, "is not a popu-
larity contest." People are encour-
aged to send written comments to the
State Land Board about nominated
patcels, but those comments will be
used for their substantive content,
and will not be "tallied to see which
parcel gets the most votes,"
Stewardship Trust Coordinator
Alden Whittaker said.
Land inducted imo the [rust will
continue to be managed for the bene-
fit of tnts[ beneficiaries - [he largest
of which is K-12 public education -
and land uses such as ranching and
mining will most likely continue.
