CNAPTERTWO Proposed Action aind Altemawes ,
the Proposed Action. However, the expanded facilities would be constructed within the same ,
6.5-acre fenced azea described for the Proposed Action, as depicted on Figure 2~~14. Other
buildings at the initial processing plant would be the same as those described for the Proposed
Action. ,
The lazger scale of the initial processing operation at the Piceance Site would also require
increased evaporation pond capacity. It is estimated that the total pond surface ;area would be 39
acres, with associated disturbance of about 60 acres (Table 2-2). Construction and design criteria
would be the same as for the Proposed Action.
2.3.1.5 Ancillary Facilities and Infrastructure ,
Access roads, natural gas lines, and the 138-kV transmission line described for the Proposed ,
Action would be adequate to serve the increased production under this alternative.
2.3.2 Pipeline '
This alternative would utilize the same product pipeline and water return line described for the
Proposed Action for transportation of sodium solutions to the Pazachute Site and return of ,
process water to the Piceance Site for reuse. Pipeline construction criteria and i nstallation
schedule would be the same as described for the Proposed Action. However, because the
production of nahcolite and associated circulation of process solution and return. water would ,
increase, auxiliary pump stations would be required on each pipeline under this alternative. Due
to hydraulic requirements, the pump stations would be located at sepazate locations
approximately 2 to 3 miles north of Davis Point. The pump stations would be powered by ,
electricity and would be rated at about 1,500 horsepower.
Electrical power would be transmitted to the pump station sites by a 2- to 3-mild-long
underground transmission line that would tie into an existing transmission line routed across ,
Davis Point. The transmission line would be laid in a sepazate trench adjacent to the trench
carrying the product pipeline and water return line. Because the transmission line would be

constructed within the permanent pipeline easement, there would be no incremental disturbance '
associated with its installation. Due to their remote location, the pump stations would be
unmanned and would be operated by remote control from either the Piceance Site or the '
Pazachute Site. The pump stations would receive routine maintenance approximately twice a
month. Each pump station would occupy a 1- to 2-acre site that would be covered with gravel
and fenced to restrict access. Each pump station would feature a single pump building with
satellite dish for communication/remote control and a small electrical substation..
2.3.3 Parachute Processing Plant '
Under this alternative, the Pazachute Site would be utilized for final processing .if sodium
products as described for the Proposed Action.
