Wetland values:
Approximately 5 acres of wetlands are present along the 5
miles of the Purgatoire River that crosses the proposed permit
area.
4. Floodplain/unstable geology concerns:
Floodplains are present along the Purgatoire River. No other
natural hazard lands are present in or around the permit area.
5. Threatened or endangered plant/animal species:
On November 24, 1989 the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service
furnished a document which stated that no federally listed species
or species proposed for listing are present in or adjacent to the
permit area.
6. Migratory birds of high Federal interest:
Golden Eagles and other migratory birds winter in the mine
area; however, no nests or birds are known to occupy the mine.
7. Renewable resource/unique agricultural values:
The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) has determined that prime
farmlands do not exist within the area. Two strath terraces are
located above the Purgatoire River at elevations of 90 feet and 170
feet, respectively. The terraces produce hay by means of
irrigation practices; hay is produced on the valley floor, aided
by flood irrigation. Cattle graze in the area from mid-summer to
early fall.
8. Recreational resource values:
Recreational resource values in the area are limited to those
associated with hunting, fishing, and sight-seeing.
9. Social and economic values:
Current employment, approximately 160 persons, would not
change under this proposal.
10. Conformance with Federal, State, regional, and/or local land
use plans, programs, and policies:
There are no Federal, State, regional, or local land use
plans, programs, or policies for the project area or the general
region.
8
