Wetland values: <br />Approximately 5 acres of wetlands are present along the 5 <br />miles of the Purgatoire River that crosses the proposed permit <br />area. <br />4. Floodplain/unstable geology concerns: <br />Floodplains are present along the Purgatoire River. No other <br />natural hazard lands are present in or around the permit area. <br />5. Threatened or endangered plant/animal species: <br />On November 24, 1989 the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service <br />furnished a document which stated that no federally listed species <br />or species proposed for listing are present in or adjacent to the <br />permit area. <br />6. Migratory birds of high Federal interest: <br />Golden Eagles and other migratory birds winter in the mine <br />area; however, no nests or birds are known to occupy the mine. <br />7. Renewable resource/unique agricultural values: <br />The Soil Conservation Service (SCS) has determined that prime <br />farmlands do not exist within the area. Two strath terraces are <br />located above the Purgatoire River at elevations of 90 feet and 170 <br />feet, respectively. The terraces produce hay by means of <br />irrigation practices; hay is produced on the valley floor, aided <br />by flood irrigation. Cattle graze in the area from mid-summer to <br />early fall. <br />8. Recreational resource values: <br />Recreational resource values in the area are limited to those <br />associated with hunting, fishing, and sight-seeing. <br />9. Social and economic values: <br />Current employment, approximately 160 persons, would not <br />change under this proposal. <br />10. Conformance with Federal, State, regional, and/or local land <br />use plans, programs, and policies: <br />There are no Federal, State, regional, or local land use <br />plans, programs, or policies for the project area or the general <br />region. <br />8 <br />
