Box 229 Boulder, Colorado 80306 Re: Comments on Arkansas Valley Seed Company Turf and Reclamation Mixtures. Dear Ms. Schlagel : Jim McArdle has asked me to comment on the list of seed mixtures from Arkansas Valley that you supplied him with. The following are some specific comments for each seed mixture and my general comments applying to all or most of them: I. Dryland Pasture Mix 1 . Looks good for grazed areas. 2. This mixture is too dependent on smooth brome and wheatgrasses for wilder areas. II. Foothills Mix 1 . Probably the most diverse and best for our applications. If a few forbs (Native Wildflower Mix?) were added to this mixture, it would be excellent. III. Native Wonder Mix 1 . The main component (40%) of this mixture is 'Fairway' crested wheatgrass which is not native to Colorado or the United States. _ Also, 30% of the mix is annual ryegrass and the Division does not encourage planting of annuals in general . IV. Multi-Color High Altitude 1 . This mixture has the best diversity of life forms (grasses and forbs with even a legume) of any mixture. V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XIII, XIV, and XV. 1 . These mixtures would be good for planned parks but, again, there are no forbs. 2. Operators should steer clear of seed mixtures which require irrigation for establishment or maintenance. Irrigation is very expensive and there are other things (such as diverse seed mixtures, fertilization, and seedbed preparation) which operators can use which are much more cost effective. 423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
