SUMMARY OF ELK TRAPPING (1985)
Calves
Trap Total % Trap Total Cows
Nights Captures Success Escapes Recaptures (Yearlings) Total Males Females Undetermined Bulls
246 39a 16b 5 4c 16d 20 3 4 13 (2)
(2)
a In addition to the 39 captures of elk, one deer and six sheep were captured. Traps were also sprung but empty
43 times. The evidence indicated that deer were responsible for most of these sprung traps. The deer
evidently sprung the traps and then escaped through the rabbit run.
b 16% represents elk trap success. If the above is taken into account, overall capture rate approaches 36%.
c All four recaptures were of adult cows captured in previous years. The true number of calves recaptured is not
known because most calves were not tagged in 1985.
d 2 of 16 (13%) cows were yearlings
-7-
