(MMC) inspection of the Daniel's
residence located at 910 Grape Street Nucla, Colorado. The structure is a single story
stucco sided building set on a concrete foundation. Extensive hair{ine cracking of the
exterior stucco was noted in the inspection. The interior exhibited some minor cosmetic
flaws in the drywall, primarily cracking along tape lines between dry~+alt sheets. In
addition to inspecting the structure MMC reviewed blasting and seismograph records
from the New Horizon Mine. MMC concludes from the inspection of the stntcture and
the blast records that their is no probability drat any of [he damage observed was caused
b}' blasting.
The United States Bureau of Mines conducted extensive investigation into blast
vibrations and damage. Their conclusions aze summarized in United States Bureau of
Mines (USBM) Report of Investigations (RI) 8507 published in November 1980. The
USBM non-damage criteria has not been exceeded at the distance from blasting to the
house in question. The vast majority of New Horizon Mine blasting is within the USBM
non-damage criteria al less than '/, of the distance from 910 Grape Street to the blasting.
MMC's opinion is that the stucco cracking on the exterior of the structure is due to the
following:
Gradual sett{ement of the structures foundation, possibly due to poor drainage.
Heating, cooling and environmental factors producing stresses on the
materials composing the structure.
Lack of maintenance of the structure, especially weed control within one foot
of the foundation.
