C.O <br />(AAonrrose County) <br />Thu, 1.357 <br />COLORADO PRESS <br />III IIIIIIIIIIIII III <br />More than two hundred guests attended the official dedtcaUon ceremony of Westem Fuels' <br />New Horizon Mine at Nucla on Monday. <br />Followln a luncheon served by the Nucla Wons, Tri-State Generation & Transmission' <br />president, ~ub'Ihompson, welcomed the group - including nearly all of TYl-State's directors - <br />and lntroduttd many of the people who have been keyy to the development of the property. He <br />recognized Frank Knutson, who Is General Manager ofTriState, Gary Norton, general manager <br />o(San M1gue1 Power Association, Jim Huffman, SMPA's representative on the Trl-State board, <br />Fled Palmer, CEO of Western Fuels, Marshall Pendergras, 1n charge of Trl-State's operations, <br />Pete Un~~gqerman, Deputy General Manager of Trl-State, Zane Semince, auperln[endent of the <br />Nucla SfaUOn, and Lance Wade, manager of New Horizon Mine. <br />Palmer outlined the New Horizon Mine proII''ect and called !t "another story of growth for <br />Trl-State." He introduced several people whowere7nvolved ta the pro ect, Including Don Deardorf <br />who recently retired. RaJ Upadhyayy, his assistants Murarl Shres~a and Kirk Nobls,. Palmer <br />added that although four and a halfyears' supply of coal has been ldentUied at the current m1ne, <br />the balance of the coal to be delivered to the Nucla Station over the duration of the contract will . <br />come from the Nucla area. "We're on time and under budget," he added. <br />Nucla's mayor. John Vanderpool "set off' a small chazge In the field about a hundred yards <br />from the huge maintenance shop at the Nucla mine. <br />Jeny Demel, from the Denver office of TSG&T, read letters fioni Senator Ben Campbell and <br />Governor Roty Romer, offering their congratulallons upon opening the mine. Steve Arveshoug, <br />a member of Representative Scott Mclnnls' office, read a letter from hfm. <br />Mon Vose County Commissioner Mel Stoats tendered thanks to Trt-State and Western FUels. <br />"It's good to see locals get the opportunity to bid on work and gget jobs 1n the field:' <br />And Molly, Knutson, who helped put Together the ColoradoUte takeover forTrl-State, said, <br />"When we first of involved rn this, the Nucla Station was considered a sort of albatross. The <br />plant is now un~er reconstmcUon and today you'll see it's one of the blest successes." <br />After the events at the New Horizon M1ne there were tours of the site and of the Nucla Station. <br />Then New Horizon M1ne opened Its hospitality to the public by way of hot dogs and pop from 4. <br />p.m. to 6 p.m. during an Open House. <br />1~TTev~ Horizon Mine '°Officiai" <br />
