Box 1430 ~ "
Palisade, CO 81526
RE: Inspection of power poles on Powderhorn Coal Company lands
which have been modified to prevent raptor electrocution problems.
Dear Mr. Barb:
On March 16, 1982 an inspection of power poles was made on Powderhorn Coal
Company property. These poles have been modified to prevent raptors from
perching on the cross arms by placement of a wooden triangle on the top of
each side of the cross arms. These pole modifications were recommended by the
Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the Colorado Division of l,'ildlife (DOW)
at a similar inspection on June 10, 1982.
Besides yourself, Mike Grode, non-game Biologist, Colorado Division of
Wildlife, and Rick Krueger, from my staff, participated in the inspection.
Afike Grode and Rick Krueger determined that the cross arm modifications you
have performed are adequate to preclude raptors from perching on the power
poles.
In addition, we visited the site of the proposed South Fan. The proposed
location does not seem to conflict with any critical wildlife use areas.
In addition, we are not aware of any golden eagle nest sites within the
general vicinity. We would request, if possible, a helicopter raptor survey
be flown to determine if there are any golden eagle nests on the project
property. This would help to facilitate any future project modifications or
additions. However, at this time we do not object to the placement of the
South Fan.
We appreciate your cooperative attitude in working with us and the DOk' and
request that if we can be of further assistance, you contact Rick Krueger
at our Grand Junction Field Office, 243-2778.
Sincerely,
~,-. , ~, J
Ronel Finley
Energy Project Leader
cc: M ke Grode, CDOfd
~n Henne, OSM
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
FWS/Grand Junction
