Curriculum Vitae
WAYNE D. SHEPPERD, Research Silviculturist
Rocky Mountain Research Station, 240 W. Prospect, Ft. Collins, CO
(970-498-1259 E-mail:wshepperd @fs.fed.us)
EDUCATION
BS, Outdoor Recreation, 1970, Colorado State University
MS, Forest Science, 1974, Colorado State University
Ph.D., Silviculture, 1991, Colorado State University
CURRENT POSITION
1997 -present. Research Forester, Sustaining Alpine and Forest Ecosystems under
Atmospheric and Terrestrial Disturbances, RM-4451, Rocky Mountain Research Station, Fort
Collins, CO. Research includes the development and evaluation of alternative silvicultural
practices for all forest types in the central and southern Rocky Mountains and the transfer of
results to users through formal publications and direct consultation. Current studies are
underway in both conifer and aspen forest types with a major emphasis on understanding the
factors and processes responsible for the structural development of existing forests. Some
studies are quantifying the relationships between tree and stand characteristics, disturbance,
site quality, productivity and regenerative ability. Others are investigating the effects of
stocking control on growth and susceptibility to disturbance. Still others are developing
alternative management strategies to meet diverse resource objectives. This program of
research is wntributing to our knowledge of the life history and silvical requirements of Rocky
Mountain species and is answering critical questions about the methods and techniques
needed to manage these species in today's increasingly complex multiresource environment.
PREVIOUS PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
1978 to 1997 -Research Forester, RM1252 Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment
Station, Fort Collins, Colorado.
1976 to 1978 -Forester (Forest Silviculturist), USFS, Region 2, Rio Grande National Forest,
Monte Vista, Colorado.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES AND RECOGNITION
Member, Sigma Xi, The Research Society
Member, Xi Sigma Pi National Forestry Honorary.
Member,•The Nature Conservancy
Affiliate Faculty, Colorado State University, Department of Forest Rangeland and Watershed
Stewardship.
Biographee in "Who's Who in the West", "Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America", and
"Personalities of the Americas".
Recipient of the 1995 Award from National Silviculture Workshop (and subsequent cash
award from theRM Station) "For outstanding contributions to Timber Management in the field
of Silviculture."
PUBLICATIONS (Complete list available on request)
23
