steeply dipping rock, Rock which is bedded tends to~ak along the bedding
~' plane and is very resistant to breaking across the plane. In a fashion, it is
somewhat like plywood. Plywood can be easily broken if pressure is applied
between the individual sheets, but trying to break plywood across the plane of
the sheets is very difficult.
Reclamation will be extremely difficult on this backwall, but will be
comparatively simple over most of the rest of the quarry. The quarry faces
slightly north of east, the site is shaded on hot summer afternoons, and the
precipitation patterns in the local area are highly favorable. Desiccating
winds are not so severe here. All in all, it is really a nearly ideal
reclamation site, except for the steep topographic problems.
DESCRIPTION QF L,QQ~j,, PROBLEMS: Until just a few years ago, this quarry was
highly isolated. There were very few houses in the area and visibility was not
of great concern to the general public. Their attention was focused on the
Queen's Canyon Quarry.
A few years ago, this all changed. Housing moved into the valley below
the quarry and is now appearing on the tops of the hogbacks to the east.
Houses now are being built nearly to the edge of the permit boundary. If it
were not for the foresight of Castle Concrete to recognize this developing
situation and provide for a huge buffer of Castle Concrete owned land between
the quarry and the developments, it is possible that houses could be built
dangerously close to the quarry.
On the plus side, however, there have not been any terribly severe
problems with these developments. There have beer. isolated instances of
individuals becoming upset over the operation, but on the whole, it appears
that most of the people in the area recognize that they moved to an area near
an "ugly" quarry by choice and to complain would simply not make much sense.
Hopefully, this silent cooperation will maintain itself well into the future.
DESC72IPTION Qg gg'c,~~ RECLAMATION WORK: Not much reclamation has been done at
this operation because not much land has been placed into a s~~.atus for
reclamation. Most of the quarry is still in one stage of operation or another.
Only some of the support areas have been reclaimed.
13
