i.o INTRODUCnoN

This Analytical Results Report (ARR) is prepared in partial fulfillment of Aftemative
Remedial Contracting SVategy (ARCS) Contract No. 68-W9-0025, Work Assignment No.
28-BJZZ issued to the Morrison Knudsen Corporation (MK) by the Region VIII office of the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This ARR has been prepared to report the
analytical results from samples collected on April 26,1995 as part of a Site Inspection (SI)
of the Battle Mountain Gold Site located northeast of San Luis, Colorado (CERCLIS ID#
COD983774498). The Sampling Activities Report is included as Appendix A.
Based on information derived from the Preliminary Assessment and addrdonal bad<ground
research, it was determined that surface water pathway targets may be at risk from
exposure to potential hazardous substance release originating at the Battle Mountain Gold
site. The surface water pathway was presented as the focus for sampling activities in the
Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP) prepared by MK Although the ground water pathway
was determined to be potentially affected by site adivifies, an adequat® ground water
monitoring program incorporating local drinking water quality monitoring is in place. No
site related contaminants are known to have been detected in independently analyzed
ground water samples collected from vicinity drinking water supplies (MK, 1995).
2.0 SITE DESCRIPTION
The Battle Mountain Gold site is located in Costilla County approximately 5 miles
northeast of San Luis, Colorado (see Fgure 1). Geographic coordinates of the site are
37°15'1.0' North latitude and 105°19'59.5' West longitude.
The current Battle Mountain Gold San Luis Project permit area covers 2,200 acres (641
of which are planned for disturbance) in the Sangre de Cristo foothills northeast of San
Luis, Colorado. The site is the location of historical and current predous metal mining
operations. The current operation employs a carbon in leach process using cyanide to
extract gold and silver from crushed ore. The site's milling process involves an ore
crushing and grinding circuit, a cyanidation dreuit, a gold recovery circuit and a tailings
treatment circuit (BMG, 1989). Site features include a processing mill, two ore piles, two
mine pits and ponds for tailings storage and leachate collection. The two current mine
pits are located in the northeastern portion of the permit area and cover a combined area
of 130 acres (Attachment i),(BMG, 1988).
arsnseat.aawv,unc - 1 - r~.., a m/io/ay
