C~
•
SAMPLING ACTIVATES REPORT FOR BATTLE MOUNTAIN GOLD
INTRODUCTION
This Sampling and Activities Report (SAR) is prepared in partial fulfillment of Work
Assignment Number 28-BJZZ issued to Morrison Knudsen Corporation (MK) by the
Region VIII office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under ARCS
Contract Number 68-W9-0025. The~subJ Ct of this SAR is the sampling conducted in
assodation with the Battle Mountain ~Gol~Company-San Luis Pro)ect located northeast
of San Luis, Colorado (EPA ID# COD983774498). A Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP)
was prepared and approved by EPA on March 21, 1995. The SAP served as a guide for
fieldwork assoclated with the Site Inspection (SI). The SAR discusses compliance wdh
and deviations from the SAP and other field observations.
BACKGROUND
The Battle Mountain Gold site is located in Costilla County approximately 5 miles
northeast of San Luis, Colorado (see Fgure 1). Geographic coordinates of the active
mine site are 37°15'1.0' North latitude and 105°19'59.5' West longitude.
The site is the location of historic and current predous metal mining operations (gold and
silver). Currently the Battle Mountain Gold-San Luis Project beneficlates all ore through
a carbon in leach dreuit using cyanide located in a mill building. The milling process
includes an ore crushing and grinding clrcuit, a cyanidation arcuit, a gold recovery clrcuit
and a tailings treatment arcuit.• The current mining operation consists of a processing
mill, two ore piles, two mine pits and ponds for tailings storage and leachate collection.
The two current mine pits are located in the northeastern portion of the permit area and
cover a combined area of 130 acres. Reclamation of the mine pits has been initiated and
is ongoing. The site also includes a reportedly reclaimed 8-acre heap leach pad and
mine pit resulting from historic (19741975) mining activities. The historic heap leach pad
was constructed and operated by Earth Sciences, Inc. of Golden Colorado in 1975.
The current site operator is Battle Mountain Resources, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary
of Battle Mountain Gold Company. The northeastern block of the permitted area is
owned by Earth Sciences, Inc. and leased to Battle Mountain Gold. The remainder of the
permitted area is owned by Battle Mountain Gold Company.
1nm~l•oeraceo.rx - 1 - rwa 4 N+~M9
