'Chi; may be attrihutablc
to the levels of disturbance and activit.res a L~•:ndy present along the OnF: Creek valley.
~ These activities include the presence of rands and railroadrs situated atop the alluvium
\~/ and disturbances from past mining activities.
Uses of Ground f~/a ter in the ,l rea
Within the immediate permit area, there a m no direct users of ground water, other than
~ Pittsburg and Midway Coal Company. !:'ithin the region, however, a number of wells and
U,~1~ro adjudicated springs exist. Table 2.5-7 and Exhibit 2.5-11 of the permit application
~ ~ portray the locations of this information. Of the ground water users sho:on regionally
`tr on Exhibit 2.5-11, them are two registered wells and two adjudicated) s,r,rinys Located
~~ immediately adjacent to the permit boundary. Three of these situ ^ m situated on the
western side of Trout Creek, within the alluvial terrace. T,he fourth Weil is located
on the East bank of Trout Creek, im;.m^diatel~r upstream from h%est Ridce. P6M's do.~stic
well, Located within the permit boundary, .s sited orilacent to Oak Creek.
In addition to the two royisterecJ::o11s discussed above, three additional non-registered
domestic wells are situated on the western r.ortion of the Trout Creek valley, across
from the permit area. These inc.lucie two wells at the Green Ranch and one at the
Gabossi home. The unregistered w<~lls are not sho~,~r on Exhibit 2.5-11.
It is not definitely 1:no:,•n :; i. thin chat formation the five wells in close proximity to
the permit area are completed. nn the basis o.` location and total depth, the applicant
concludes that the wells most. likelu obtain :rater from the Trout Creel: allu~~ium.
SURFACE I:'ATER
assn and is drained by several ephemeral
streams which flo:d into Trout Creel: anri Oal: Creel:. These are both perennial streams
which flow in a northeasterly rlir~~ction into th^ 1',~nna Piver. The ephereral streams
draining the permit area flow predomin mrtLJ :reef-r:orthr,~est into Trout Creek, which follows
the western permit boundary. Oak Creek flews along the eastern Zimit of the permit
area. Since the eastern permit boon rla ru is p.rrt~ni_u ~!e fi n_d i:y the Trout Creel: -
Oak Creek drainage di vi rie, ra;; i:r^,=r. receive; onlu o sing 11 portion of the runoff from
the permit area. Doth perenni.u streams ar.~ inci.ser? into h•_drock, :.~ith Trout Creek
training approximately 54 s.7;ra rc miles above file noz therm Limit of the mine, while Oar.
Creek. dzains appro::imotciy 32 squ~rrc rr<tZcs (p. 2.5-1d ar,~: 17 of rice pe remit application).
Runoff events in both these strcarns are dom~natac ia; snc.;rael.t. Peak. spring n:noff
occurs slightly later in Trout Crock than in Oal: Creel; because the head:;aters of the
former stream are Located at a much higher clevat inn.
Mining operations facilities should not b•~ significantly impacted by large flood events
from these streams. The 'I'rouz Crcck floodplain is r.e1L belo~.; proposed a7 c7 existing
mining activities (Exhibit ;.3-4 and 3.3-~ of the permit application). The loading
facilities and office area are in the Oak Creek idatershed, ar?jacent to the 100-year,
29-hour flood plain, but G to 12 leer above flood elevations of 7211 and 7225 feet,
Exhibit 2.5-9 of the permit application sheers the floorl, nlain delineation of Cak Creek.
There are 43 adjudicated springs ir: the Trout CreeN. e,~atershed. fJine of these are
shoem on Exhibit 2.5-11 of the permit application, although none are located inside
U,7 ~ the permit boundaries. There arc, however, numerous small snrinys or seeps which have
RitcS developed in the spoils of previously mined areas as a insult of perched water tables
confined against the buried hiyhwall of the boxcut Ip. 2.5-50 of the permit applica-
tion, Exhibits 2.5-21 and 22).
