III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
999
- STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Govei
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Director
October 11 , 1989
Mr. Bob Sherman
Rock castle Coal Company
c/o Mr, Mark Korb
Korb and Carroll
106 Oak Street
Fort Collins, CO 80524
Re: Grazing at the Grassy Gap Mine, File No. C-81-039
Dear Mr. Sherman:
Two weeks ago, I performed the third quarter complete inspection at the
Grassy Gap tdine. I had difficulty getting in the gate at Twentymile Road,
so I took the liberty of contacting John Servatius and Phil Salazar of
Bogle Farms to learn the combination of one of the locks (combination 0-0-0,
for your future use). Mr. Servatius indicated that he thought the gates were
locked because over one thousand of Perulis' sheep were grazing in there.
During the inspection I did not see any sheep but noticed a sheepherder along
the access road within a mile of Twentymile Road and also noticed that there
had been moderately intensive grazing at Pits 2, 3 and 5. -
Rock castle has committed to submittal of a grazing plan on page II.J-llb of
the permit application. A grazing plan should include: the carrying capacity
of the area (A.U.M.s), the number and type of animals to be grazed, the
percent utilization of the stand, and a schedule of animal rotation to
different areas. Rockcastle should submit this type of plan by next spring
to ensure that grazing-at-•the•stte-is properly=managed: -There appeared~to ~°-~~°•--
be significant confusion among the individuals with whom I talked about the
grazing status at various pits.
The Division does encourage grazing on reclaimed areas to provide evidence
that the post~nining land use can be supported.
Sincerely,
Catherine W.
