"MUDFEST" DAMAGE
"Mudfest" damage is most severe in the Peat Bog, where the water table is at or near the surface.
The "Mudfest" vehicles churned the soil to mud with most, if not all, vegetation destroyed. 1
estimate seven to eight acres as most severely damaged.
For discussion purposes the 7 to 8 most severely damaged acres is divided into a West Area and
an East Area. The West Area is west of the relic crane which is on a rocked causewa~~ and the
East Area is east of the causeway. A map at a scale of 1' = 200', outlining the east azid west
areas of the most severe damage is attached.
Both the east and west areas were severely churned and rutted by the "Mudfest" vehicles. Ruts
up to two feet or more were observed. Oil and or grease, presumed from the vehicles; was
observed locally on the water. Water slowly flowing through the areas appears to be •dispersing
or flushing the oil and or grease.
Broken tow straps, tow cables, jumper cables, auto parts, broken boards, water hose fiom a
nearby company drill rig, beverage containers (mostly beer) and miscellaneous trash I~tter both
the east and west areas, with more trash in the west area.
At elevations above the water table, the depths of vehicle ruts are less deep, but grass and brush
were matted down by heavy traffic in the wet soft soil. Existing trails were widened by the
heavy traffic and new trails made by the traffic.
Total area involved in the "Mudfest" is estimated at ] 5 to 25 acres. Damage to the area outside
the 7 to 8 acres of severe damage is less with vehic]e tracks through the grass and brush and
scattered trash. Although these outer areas are enough above the water table and in firmer soil so
that the vehicles did not cause deep ruts, some vegetation damage did occw.
A series of self explanatory photographs are attached.
IMPACT
Although I am neither a biologist or botanist and cannot address the details of reclamation of the
area damaged by the "Mudfest", I have spent many years in the field as a professional geologist
and recognize that the process of reclamation will be a slow and demanding task.
The impact of "Mudfest" on vegetation, water quality down stream and the impact on small
animal habitat cannot be addressed in this preliminary study. Those are issues which need to be
addressed by other professionals.
Of this we can be certain: no one, nor any thing benefited from "Mudfest".
